Building permits: who is responsible?
Whether a terrace, retaining wall, fence or demolition needs a permit is governed by the Hessian building code (Hessische Bauordnung). For projects in Wetzlar, the city’s building regulations office (Bauordnungsamt der Stadt Wetzlar) is responsible; for the other towns it is usually the building control authority of the Lahn-Dill district. If in doubt, ask your municipality before you start.
